Sean FitzGerald has more than 30 years of diverse private practice and in-house experience representing clients in civil litigation, governmental law, labor and employment, regulatory compliance, appellate law, and general commercial law. He is admitted to practice in state and federal courts in Michigan and Ohio as well as the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Sean is a graduate of the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. He earned his Juris Doctor cum laude from the University of Detroit, where he was an editor for the Law Review and competed in the moot court.
Sean served as in-house counsel for Wayne State University for over eleven years and as Vice-President and General Counsel for Bowling Green State University for ten years. In those roles, he assembled and managed teams of attorneys, paralegals, and external professionals. He provided effective and timely strategic advice and legal counsel to university boards and senior leaders on all its key matters and risks. Labor and employment, complex real estate and commercial transactions, health care, regulatory compliance, and risk management are among the many areas where Sean obtained successful results. In private practice, Sean has extensive experience in zoning and land use, labor and employment law, municipal prosecutions and all areas of governmental liability.
Sean’s community and professional involvement includes serving as an elected City Commissioner for the City of Plymouth, Chair and member of the City of Plymouth Planning Commission, member of the State Bar of Michigan Representative Assembly, Wayne County mediator, and serving as a panel member of the American Bar Association, the National Association of College and University Attorneys, and the Association of Corporate Counsel.
